Sei Ryu Kai Japan is proud to release a DVD featuring Nishioka Sensei teaching the first series of kata in Shinto Muso Ryu... Omote. This DVD is compiled from recordings of kata practice with Nishioka Sensei, mostly at the Bunbukan Dojo (Tokyo), between 2004 and 2006. In 110 minutes of footage you can watch Nishioka Sensei teaching and performing techniques found in the Omote series. Nishioka Sensei shares his deep knowledge of the techniques and spirit of Shinto Muso Ryu, as he teaches and corrects his students. Nishioka Sensei's long experience in the ryu make him one of the few people who can talk of the techniques of the generation preceeding him, that is the techniques of Shimizu and Otofuji Senseis. This DVD does not show Omote in 'demonstration style', but instead allows you to step inside the dojo and feel how it is to train with Nishioka Sensei.

By capturing Nishioka Sensei on video as he teaches regular classes, the film allows us to see him as he corrects regular mistakes from his students. While he lectures and demonstrates on themes like Hasuji, Te No Uchi, and the Riai of different Kata, he allows us a glimpse into the roles of Shidachi and uchidachi, as well as what practicing Koryu means to him. Wonderful and unique, I am sure I will discover a lot more on this movie as I develop myself in Jodo.
